Why does it cost so much to be Jewish?
So many Jewish people find it hard to affiliate. Membership dues at the average Long Island synagogue runs $2,000 to $3,000 per year. If you have Hebrew School age children, add a few hundred dollars a year per child for Hebrew School tuition. Depending upon where you want to sit on the High Holy Days, you may have to pay extra for tickets. Add to this the infamous building fund and other charges. Many families, especially in this economy, cannot afford it. Perhaps this is a major reason that more than 40% of all Jewish families on Long Island are unaffiliated.
Suburban Park Jewish Center in East Meadow is part of the solution. Family membership at SPJC is $1,050 per year with significant discounts for senior citizens, singles, and single parents. Membership dues include FREE Hebrew School tuition, FREE High Holy Day seats and there is no building fund. In addition, new members receive a 50% discount for the first year and a 30% discount for the second year. For more information please call Rabbi Krasner (516)520-5733 for more details.
